An Holistic Approach to Cancer Prevention

“You have cancer.” These are three words that can devastate you and your loved ones. In 2012, over one million people will be diagnosed with cancer. One out of every two men and one out of every 2.5 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Despite these terrifying statistics, most cancers are in fact preventable.

Cancer is defined as unregulated cell growth in which the cells of one’s body divide and grow uncontrollably. Approximately five to ten percent of cancer is hereditary. This means that most cancers are caused by the environment or lifestyle, such as poor physical activity and diet, tobacco use, or toxins in the environment. Fortunately, one can control the environment or lifestyle they are currently in so they can minimize the risk of cancer.

Large cities are often filled with pollutants and toxins in the air—a result of the industrialized nature of these cities. Factories, cars, and other machinery all produce toxins which are released into the air and soon, into our lungs. These unnatural toxins can be the stepping stone towards stage I cancer—one of the four stages in cancerous growth, with stage IV being the most advanced of the stages. Smaller cities or towns do not suffer from the same problem.

Another way to minimize the risk of cancer is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Despite leaps in cancer research in the past decades, deaths from cancer have remained the same. One reason for this has been the increase in lung cancer. This affects both men and women and is mainly a result from none other than tobacco use. It is common knowledge that tobacco use can cause cancer, so by cutting tobacco use out of one’s lifestyle, it can reduce the risk of cancer dramatically.

Changing one’s diet is also a step toward achieving a healthy lifestyle. Many processed foods have added preservatives and other chemicals to make their food last longer. However, since a natural part of life is death, companies must add unnatural ingredients which, much like the toxins in the air, can upset the natural growth of a body.

Being diagnosed with cancer may feel like the end of the world, but fortunately it is not. Dr. Thomas Lodi, M.D., the founder of An Oasis of Healing, an alternative cancer treatment center in Mesa, Arizona, is dedicated to helping people stop making cancer through alternative medicine therapies. With his Insulin Potentiation Therapy—a low dose form of chemotherapy used since the 1930s—he has been able to take on stage IV cancer patients with only weeks left to live and save their lives. Because the dosing is much lower than traditional chemotherapy, the side effects such as hair loss and decreased production of blood cells are minimized. This allows the treatment to be given more frequently and therefore, the cancer cells have less time to become resistant to the drug. For more information on this alternative medicine therapy, visit

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

A common problem with conventional medicine is doctors continue to write prescriptions for chemically based medicines that only treat the side effects of disease. In many cases these medicines compound underlying diseases; creating more serious issues for patients. A study suggests that, each year approximately 2.2 million US hospital patients experience adverse drug reactions to prescribed medications.

Another problem with conventional medicine is that it only treats the symptoms and not the root cause. Most diseases today are brought on by a combination of environmental and dietary issues like pollution, vitamin deficiency, hormones, and antibiotics in nearly everything we consume.

For example, the National Center for Health Statistics reports that as many as 36% of Americans are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D may also play a role in preventing diabetes and hypertension. Naturopathic doctors use natural vitamins, among other methods, to prevent, treat and cure the base cause of diseases – not just treat the effects and symptoms of diseases the way many allopathic (traditional) medical practitioners do.

Treating symptoms of disease rather than the root cause of a disease is not always the best approach in caring for patients. Naturopathic clinics approach medicine in a different way by utilizing various modalities and naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic doctors craft comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medicine. Holistic and traditional approaches are balanced in order to treat disease and restore health.

At naturopathic clinics, physicians test their pathology diagnostic skills in order to identify the underlying cause of diseases. Then, they use natural therapies to promote the body’s innate natural healing process. NMD’s (Naturopathic medical doctors) utilize a variety of modalities including homeopathy, IV therapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, botanical medicine, nutrition counseling, integrative care, and more. These approaches have proven successful in safely treating a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

Dr. Tricia Pingel, NMD provides comprehensive medical care based on the foundation of naturopathic principles. She believes in a multi-dimensional and integrative approach to healthcare and will work closely with other healthcare professionals to assure that her patient’s needs are met.

Dr. Pingel offers a variety of services using naturopathic medicine and treats a wide range of medical conditions. As high levels of vitamin deficiency increase to epidemic levels in the US, it is important to raise awareness and knowledge and treat the problem. Dr. Pingel offers IV therapy at her naturopathic clinic because she believes it is crucial to care for the human body as a whole when healing disease. She also provides counseling and presents clients with better solutions to heal the human body as a whole. To learn more visit

Learning To Be Happy

It may not be possible to be happy all the time, but it’s certainly worth aiming for! Sometimes just a little stress can cause unhappiness. Other times it’s something more serious, like losing your direction in life or questioning the value of a relationship.
Everyone experiences such dilemmas—you are not alone. It can be difficult to find the right answers, but one thing is for sure: we all want to be happy. Fortunately there are many ways to regain the happiness we seek in our lives.
One way is to develop an internal locus of control. Optimists tend to be more happy than pessimists, partly because they maintain an internal locus of control—a belief that they are in control of their own fate. They believe that they have the power inside of them to fix whatever problems come their way, and they reject acting like a victim. They experience less stress and they believe they are free to address problems in accordance with their own values, not someone else’s.
Those with an external locus of control feel powerless in the face of external circumstances, and let those circumstances dictate who they are. They may not be motivated to move beyond their current situation because they feel it is out of their control. They feel more stressed because they keep dealing with the same situations over and over again, which fuels their unhappiness, and the cycle continues to repeat itself.
Another way to find happiness is to change your environment. While this is certainly much easier said than done, making small changes in your surroundings can result in a big change in your outlook on life. Sometimes changing just one person or one situation can change your perspective drastically.
Try introducing yourself to someone you’ve seen many times at the coffee shop to bring a new experience into your life. Drop a romantic relationship that may be holding you back. This might free you up for new relationships – romantic or otherwise. Or reinvigorate a long lost or forgotten passion – a hobby, a sport, or a talent. The environment around that passion may have changed over time, so a familiar environment also becomes a new environment. The familiarity will help you ease back into the pursuit, but the unknown will motivate you to learn more about it. And opening up brand new passions releases you to explore new and exciting worlds to take your mind off things that make you unhappy.
Life coach Loree Bischoff’s mission is to help you rediscover yourself and find happiness again. Your partnership with Loree is designed to focus on your interests, challenges, and goals. She will help you find answers that are already within you, and common-sense solutions to life’s questions.
In her new book, Common Sense Happiness: 5 Principles for People Who Want To Stop Whining, Bitching, and Suffering, Loree outlines five principles that can help you eliminate the frustrations that plague you and find the sweet spot in life! For more information, visit
